Apple Picking Season Comes to NY, NJ and CT – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK – One of the most popular fall activities of the season is apple picking. And if you live in the tri-state area, you’re lucky to be in an ideal area for this type of activity.

New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have plenty of places to go and take part in the beloved fall tradition.

From apple picking to apple picking donuts to hayrides, we’re sharing these local spots for fall fun.


  • Where: Harbes Orchard – 5698 Sound Ave., Riverhead, NY
  • Hours: Open Monday and Friday from 10:00 to 17:00; weekends and public holidays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays).
  • What is: Apple picking is the main attraction at the 78-acre Harbes Orchard, which is part of the Harbes Family Farm. The orchard has 27 different varieties of apples. However, Harbes Family Farm also offers a number of other beloved fall activities, including pumpkin picking and cider donuts.

  • Where: 812 Sound Ave., Calverton, NY
  • Hours: 9:00am to 4:30pm (unless otherwise noted due to limited quantities or weather conditions). Call 631-929-4327 to confirm daily hours.
  • What is: Lewin’s farm is a fourth generation family farm. It’s the first self-serve farm on Long Island. Apple picking lasts until October and sometimes later depending on the season. Apple varieties include honeycrisp and macoun ready.

  • Hours: Monday to Friday from 12:00 to 17:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00
  • What is: Schmitt Family Farm offers a number of seasonal favorites, including fruit and vegetable picks and hayrides.

  • Hours: Take your pick from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m
  • What is: Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm, located in Yorktown Heights, New York, offers a wide variety of activities including picking apples, pumpkins, peaches, a corn maze and more.

  • Where: 62 Granite Springs Road, Granite Springs, NY
  • Hours: Take your pick from 10am to 5pm daily.
  • What is: This family-owned farm has been in Westchester County since 1828 and offers a number of activities, including apple picking that began on September 6 and runs daily through November. Macintosh, Gala, Red Delicious and Fujis are among the dozens of apples on offer.

  • Hours: Pick-Your-Own is open daily through November.
  • What is: Alstede Farm offers apple picking and other family-oriented fall activities, including pumpkin people and a corn maze. However, due to health concerns, Alstede Farms now requires everyone to attend Choose your own are purchased on your website for your visit.

  • Where: 244 Wierimus Road, Hillsdale, NJ
  • Hours: September and October weekends from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (reservation required online).
  • What is: Apple picking began on September 3 this year at Demarest Farms. Reservations are required in advance due to COVID-19. Demarest Farms also offers pumpkin picking, movie nights and a Halloween light show, among other activities. All tickets must be purchased in advance.

  • Where: Milford, NJ
  • Hours: Only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (with last entry at 5:30 p.m.).
  • What is: This family farm offers apple and peach picking.
  • Details: Call ahead to find out exactly which fruit can be picked and in which field. For more information go here.


  • Where: 125 Plumtrees Road, Bethel, CT
  • Hours: Pick your own apples from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • What is: There are more than 20 varieties of apples to pick at Blue Jay Orchards. In addition, there is a pumpkin patch, a farmer’s market and a bakery.

  • Hour: they are open 7 days a week from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • What is: In addition to apple picking, Silverman’s Farms offers scenic tractor rides, an animal farm and a farm market.
