A new scandal has surrounded the billionaire and former president of the United States, Donald Trump. After it was revealed that he and his children were being sued civilly, he spoke out almost immediately about the news.
“Another witch hunt by racist Attorney General Letitia James, who failed to run for governor and received virtually no public support”Trump said on his social network Truth Social.
His spokeswoman, Liz Harrington, also had her share of comments on the issue, which puts Trump back on the public agenda. “A tale of two justice systems – yes, where criminals go free and Democrats only go after their political opponents!” Harrington also wrote on Truth Social, the former president’s social network.
New York Attorney General Letitia James announced civil lawsuits against former US President Donald Trump and several of his children after investigating the tax practices of his business group, the Trump Organization.
“We are suing Donald Trump for breaking the law. […] in order to earn him a profithis family and company,” the prosecutor said at a press conference.
As detailed by James in a more than 200-page case, the former president and his children allegedly engaged in widespread fraud, which lasted more than a decade and affected all levels of the organization and from which Trump himself profited.
“These frauds and misrepresentations […] were conducted by Trump Organization senior management as part of a joint effort for each annual (tax) return and were approved by the highest levels of the Trump Organization, including Mr. Trump himself,” the letter said.
James believes Trump and the other defendants may have violated state and criminal laws, so he has referred the case to the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and the Internal Revenue Service, according to CNN.
The origin of the lawsuit goes back to March 2019, when the statement of the former lawyer of the Trump Organization, Michael Cohen, before the United States Congress.raise questions about the company’s “potentially fraudulent financial statements”.
Trump, for his part, has repeatedly criticized the investigation, which he considers a “crusade” against him, and has even referred to James as a “criminal prosecutor” responsible for a “vindictive and selfish” case.
In addition to the claims by the New York State Attorney General, there are several ongoing investigations into Trump, including one about public records in the former president’s possession that led to an FBI search of the Republican tycoon’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
In recent days, Trump has emphasized that if he is accused of the case because of classified information found at his house in Mar-a-Lago, or by any process carried out in the United States, the country could face severe consequences.
